Census figures put 1,894 dwellings into just 1.91 square kilometres, which makes this a compact suburb with a lot of plumbing per street.

The housing tells you why. The place ran as its own municipality from 1871, back when coal was the local industry, and the older streets still carry pre-war cottages and Federation homes in brick and weatherboard.

Infill units and townhouses have been added since the early 2000s.
